Boom Lift Safety Tips for Construction Sites

Boom lifts, also known as aerial work platforms or cherry pickers, are often used on construction sites to reach high areas. Like any heavy machinery, they require strict safety measures to prevent accidents. Here are some important safety tips for using a boom lift on a construction site:

1. Proper Training and Certification

  • Ensure that all operators are trained and certified in boom lift operation.
  • Operators should be familiar with the lift’s controls, maintenance procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Only qualified personnel should operate a boom lift.

2. Pre-Use Inspection

  • Conduct a thorough inspection before each use, including:
    • Checking the hydraulic system for leaks
    • Inspecting tires for wear and proper inflation
    • Verifying the proper functioning of the emergency lowering system
    • Ensuring the platform and guardrails are secure
    • Inspecting batteries or electrical components
  • Refer to the manufacturer’s manual for specific maintenance guidelines.

3. Stabilizing the Boom Lift

  • Always set up the boom lift on a firm, level surface. Avoid operating on slopes or soft ground unless specifically designed for it.
  • Use stabilizers or outriggers, if available, to ensure elevation stability.

4. Using Fall Protection

  • Ensure workers wear appropriate fall protection, such as a harness and lanyard.
  • Keep guardrails in place and never remove them while elevated.
  • Attach fall protection to a designated anchor point on the lift, not the guardrails.

5. Observe Load Capacity Limits

  • Do not exceed the lift’s maximum weight capacity, including the operator and all tools or equipment.
  • Consult the lift’s load chart and ensure weight is evenly distributed on the platform.
  • Avoid adding excessive weight, which can destabilize the lift.

6. Avoid Overreaching

  • Do not lean out from the platform; reposition the lift as needed to maintain balance.
  • Overreaching can lead to unbalanced movement and increased tip-over risk.

7. Check Weather Conditions

  • Avoid using the boom lift in high winds, heavy rain, or icy conditions.
  • High winds can cause instability; wet or icy surfaces may lead to loss of control.

8. Maintain a Safe Distance from Hazards

  • Keep a safe distance from overhead power lines, electrical equipment, and other site hazards.
  • Follow local regulations — typically maintain at least 10 feet of clearance from electrical lines.
  • Be aware of nearby structures and moving machinery to prevent collisions.

9. Safe Operation

  • Operate the lift with both hands on the controls and stand firmly within the platform.
  • Never allow anyone to enter or exit the platform while it is in motion or elevated.
  • Ensure the platform is level and stabilized before lifting.

10. Use Spotters When Necessary

  • Have a spotter guide the operator when working in tight or obstructed spaces.
  • Maintain constant communication between the operator and the spotter.

11. Keep the Platform Clear

  • Secure all tools and materials on the platform to prevent them from falling.
  • Do not exceed platform occupancy or allow workers to stand or sit on the platform edges.

12. Avoid Swinging the Boom

  • Use smooth, controlled movements to prevent swinging or jerking motions.
  • Ensure the area is clear before moving or rotating the lift.

13. Post-Use Care

  • Lower the platform, turn off the engine, and lock out the controls when finished.
  • Clean the lift and inspect it for any damage or wear.
  • Report any issues immediately for proper maintenance or repair.

By following these safety guidelines, you can significantly reduce the risks associated with operating a boom lift and help maintain a safe working environment on construction sites.
