Scissor Lift Safety Tips

Scissor lifts are commonly used in construction, but like any heavy equipment, they come with their own set of safety concerns. Here are some essential safety tips for using scissor lifts on construction sites:

1. Proper Training

  • Ensure that all operators are properly trained and certified in using scissor lifts.
  • Understand the manufacturer’s guidelines, including load capacity, maintenance procedures, and operational limits.

2. Inspect the Lift Before Use

Conduct a pre-operational inspection of the lift each day before use. Check the following:

  • Tires for proper inflation
  • Hydraulic system for leaks or issues
  • Platform controls to ensure they function properly
  • Safety guardrails and emergency lowering mechanisms
  • Battery and electrical systems (if applicable)

3. Stabilize the Lift

  • Always ensure that the ground is level and firm before using the scissor lift.
  • Avoid using the lift on sloped surfaces. If necessary, use outriggers or stabilizers to help level the lift.
  • Never attempt to use a scissor lift on uneven terrain unless it’s specifically designed for that purpose.

4. Use Fall Protection

  • Always use appropriate fall protection when working at heights. This may include a harness, lanyard, or other personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Keep the platform’s guardrails in place at all times. Never remove them.

5. Check the Weather Conditions

  • Avoid using the scissor lift in windy, rainy, or icy conditions.
  • High winds can destabilize the lift, and wet or icy surfaces can lead to slippery conditions.

6. Load Limits

  • Do not exceed the maximum load capacity of the lift, which includes both the weight of the workers and their tools or equipment.
  • Distribute the load evenly on the platform to maintain balance and stability.

7. Safe Movement

  • Always operate the lift from the ground control station or from within the platform (if it’s designed for that).
  • Keep your hands and feet inside the platform to avoid accidents.
  • When moving the lift, make sure the area is clear of obstacles, overhead hazards, or other workers.

8. Keep a Safe Distance from Overhead Hazards

  • Be aware of overhead power lines, scaffolding, or other structures.
  • Maintain a safe distance from any electrical hazards, as lifts can conduct electricity if they come into contact with power lines.

9. Avoid Leaning or Overreaching

  • Do not lean out too far from the platform. Overreaching can cause the lift to become unbalanced or lead to a fall.
  • If the task requires reaching out, reposition the lift to a safer location.

10. Be Aware of Other Workers

  • Maintain clear communication with other workers on the site. Use radios or other signaling devices to alert people around the lift.
  • Mark the area around the lift with cones or barriers to prevent other workers from getting too close while the lift is in use.

By following these safety tips, you can help reduce the risk of accidents and ensure the safe operation of scissor lifts on the job site.
